U14's September 2008 Report

With 13 players registered, although most are new to 11-a-side football, the U14's could look forward to a difficult but rewarding season. The first game against Macclesfield would be a severe challenge and so it turned out, but a 8-0 defeat did not tell the full story. Against an experienced team Bradwell tried to play football and showed real commitment. Unfortunately the second match was against tougher opposition who were all experienced players and the result was again an awful looking 13-0 defeat. BUT the girls played better than in the first game and were trying to put into place things worked on in training, which along with some dubious decisions meant that the scoreline gave no justice to all their efforts.
It was hoped that the third game would be different, as they were a team with several new players. A perfect start helped to settle nerves and we were 2-0 up after just 5 minutes. The first was a solo run down the right By Katie Trigg before cutting in to the box and firing past the keeper. The second came from a repeat run down the right but this time finishing with a cross that found Hannah C in the box, who took a touch to control then shot fiercely into the net. Bradwell continued to press for a third but after 25 minutes found themselves too far forward and found themselves with a 2-1 scoreline until halftime. A nightmare start to the second half saw an equaliser in just the first minute. Undeterred Bradwell continued to play their game and took the lead just 5 minutes later when an excellent pass from Charleigh Smith split the defence and allowed Katie to run into the box and shoot into the goal. The game was fairly well balanced with Bradwell creating more but was finally made safe after Steff Plant finished an excellent passing move by reacting first to a clearance and firing a fierce shot into the net.
Katie got her hat-trick in the last minute to complete an excellent 5-2 win. This was a team effort in which everyone played their part and the girls were justly rewarded for all their effort and hard work and we now need to work on improving further for the rest of the season.
